During our vacation in Cordoba, Spain, we stumbled upon a stockpile of waste wood. It turned out to be the excess wood from local olive farms, resulting from pruning and replanting. After some local inquiries, we discovered that the community used a small portion of it for firewood and cooking, as it was excellent for creating sustainable fires. Larger pieces were even used by woodturning enthusiasts.
However, most of the wood was left to rot because there was simply too much of it. To use this waste wood as fuel in a country where fuel sources are in demand. Burning this waste wood for heating or cooking releases the same amount of carbon, making it carbon neutral. Moreover, by using this wood instead of other fossil fuels, we contribute even more to reducing carbon emissions.
Wood Sustainability:
We offer a wide range of wood products for cooking and heating. Since the company's inception, we have maintained our ethical standards. We process logs from managed woodlands, which have clear woodland management programs for replanting and felling. Any imported woods or wood products, such as olive wood, come from authorised and managed farms or woodlands. We ensure that all the wood we use is from sustainable and well-managed sources through thorough due diligence.
Our firewood and heat logs are certified under the 'Ready to Burn' scheme administered by Woodsure. We also have kiln drying facilities, powered by an industrial wood-burning boiler. We utilise our waste wood to fuel our kiln dryers.
Packaging:
This is a crucial aspect of our business, and we have made significant changes to ensure sustainability. We focus on using fully recyclable net bags and paper/cardboard for our charcoal and fire lighter products. We are even launching a cardboard wood box soon. Our bags can be returned for recycling or reused if possible, and you can also recycle them at your local recycling centre.
When it comes to firelighters, we prioritise the environment by using vegetable oil or wax mixed with wood biomass instead of chemicals.
Charcoal:
Our British charcoal is sourced locally, where we use the same woods as our firewood. We use a charcoal retort that emits zero emissions and is powered by waste wood. Our professional restaurant grade charcoal is crafted from the she-oak tree, a fast-growing hardwood that is renewable and sustainable.
We are starting to make a multi-purpose compost blended with a by-product of our charcoal making called Biochar for carbon storage and soil improvement in agriculture. Just one tonne of Biochar can save up to four tonnes of CO2 emissions.
